The Hastings boys basketball team completed its tasks with such ease Thursday night that it was easy to forget the Bears are learning an entirely new system.

Cy Springs defeated Yates in the Championship game with a 75-73 win and Chavez squeezed passed Nimitz for third place, 71-67.

Galveston Ball used some intense defensive pressure Tuesday night to power its way past Deer Park 75-55 in a non-district game.
With Ball’s 12-3 record, and Deer Park’s outstanding 10-3 record, many
believed this would be the type of game you would not want to miss.
However, the only thing missing was Deer Park's answer for the
defensive pressure Ball threw at them.

Cypress Springs boys basketball coach John Harmatuk didn't need a chalkboard to dissect Monday night's 61-57 victory at Langham Creek.
He felt the biggest edge the Panthers had in a game that started as a track meet and turned into a gutcheck was their experience, specifically having 13 seniors against a Langham Creek with eight seniors of its own but a boatload of underclassmen.
But the defense did its part, blocking a handful of shots and holding Langham to one field goal in the final 3 minutes, 3 seconds to pull away in a sometimes-tense District 17-5A game.
"I have veterans - smart, tough players," Harmatuk said.

Balance leading Jersey Village to strong start
Those wondering how Jersey Village built a 12-7 record entering District 17-5A play saw why Friday night at the Berry Center.
The Falcons did their reputation proud, bolting to a 13-point lead after the first quarter and 22 by midway through the second en route to a 60-40 victory against Cypress Ridge.
Jersey Village has won with two prominent inside forces in Patrice Parker and Ashley Shoemaker, a quick point guard in Amy Doyle and having several scorers in double figures.
The Falcons got three Friday - Parker had 11 points and 15 rebounds, and Doyle and Shoemaker each scored a game-high 16 points.

The Bellaire Cardinals, who defeated Westside Tuesday night to improve to 19-0, aren't just settling for each win but rather intensifying as the season moves along.

Strake Jesuit’s Joey Brooks scored 18 of his 41 points in two overtime periods to lift the host Crusaders to a 79-74 victory against Langham Creek in a 17-5A district game Tuesday night.
After being down 24-21 at halftime, Strake Jesuit coach Wayne Jones was pleased at how his team fought back to pull out the win.
“When we came out at halftime we were the team that was down,” Jones said.

Contrary to what some may think, home schooled-students do not just sit around with their parents and read books and study. Instead, they do this, along with prepare for the same standardized test that other students do, collaborate with other home-schoolers for labs and foreign languages, and even more so, participate in competitive athletics.
One group in particular that has had success over a 15-year history is the Home Schooled Christian Youth Association (HCYA).

Seven Kinkaid players scored in just the first quarter Thursday night, allowing the Falcons boys basketball team to flash a depth of which they're particularly proud and giving Concordia Lutheran a glimpse of what it couldn't stop.
Ten players scored to help Kinkaid rout Concordia Lutheran 81-39 in the first round of the Wilder Private School Classic at The John Cooper School.
Kinkaid (5-2) led 21-10 after a quarter and pulled away in the second when it created offensive mismatches from frequently switching Concordia defenses.
Katy comes from behind to defeat HCYA
Katy's steals and HCYA's passing made for an aggressive girls basketball game Monday night, with the host Tigers posting a 58-42 victory.

The Cy-Fair girls basketball team welcomed back two new but familiar faces Monday night, and typical of an early season game the Bobcats and Elsik gutted out a low-scoring, not always pretty non-district game.
Cy-Fair held Elsik scoreless for nearly three minutes in the fourth quarter to take a 40-34 victory in the first game for sisters Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike after they helped the school’s volleyball team to the state semifinals.
Chiney had a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds and Nneka added 12 points and eight rebounds.
