Tuesday November 11, 2008
A few Stratford players couldn't help but grudgingly acknowledge the similarities between last week's sectional victory against Seven Lakes and Tuesday's somewhat surprising three-game sweep of Bellaire in a 5A-Region III quarterfinal. Seven days ago, the Spartans came from two lackluster games behind to oust upset-minded Seven Lakes. Tuesday, Stratford didn't wait as long to make its move - but it was nearly as emphatic. Down four points in what started as a back-and-forth first game, Stratford rebounded to win 26-24, then added 25-16 and 25-21 victories to advance at Butler Field House. "Our coach (Becky Palermo) was telling us before the game it's not necessarily skill that will win it, it's who wants it more," said Spartans senior Laura Edwards, whose 20 assists contributed to Jennifer Jordan's 15 kills and Mary Ellen Luck's 14.
