Area schools 'Duel in the Pool' at Katy High

    Saturday was dubbed the “Duel in the Pool” at Katy High as San Antonio Churchill, Cinco Ranch, Kingwood, Seven Lakes, Katy Taylor and The Woodlands met for a winter break competition that doubled as an early litmus test for the state championships.
Stratford, Memorial split SBISD swimming championships

  Catherine Wagner won two events and was part of two winning relays, and the Memorial girls swimming and diving team scored 566 points to win the Spring Branch ISD Invitational Saturday at Spring Branch ISD Natatorium. Wagner won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke and took part in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay for the Mustangs, who defeated second-place Stratford by 55 points. Cinco Ranch's Lauren Sutton won the 200 free (2:01.2) and 500 free (5:21.5), and Stratford's Sara Mokhtari swept the 1- and 3-meter diving awards. Her brother, Sean, did the same on the boys side. Stratford took the boys championship with 530 points, outdistancing Memorial (455.5).

          The first day of the annual Katy ISD swimming and diving invitational is always composed of diving.   This year, schools from Katy and Cy-Fair ISD began the competition at Taylor High School’s natatorium Friday evening.
Seven Lakes boys, girls swim teams sweep Cinco

    Seven Lakes' swimming and diving team was coming off a rough weekend.   In terms of competition, Tuesday wasn't any easier.   Going against district rival Cinco Ranch, the Spartans boys won 196-176 and the girls  outscored the Cougars 190-175. “The kids swam really hard,” Spartans coach Jordan Beck said.

      It was an early-season battle between two rivals, but when it’s Memorial against Stratford, everyone steps their game up to mid-season levels. In the first meet of the season, Memorial did well in on the girls side, edging the Spartans 158-156.

  Hunter Bayley didn’t choose to swim for the University of Texas purely for geographical reasons. Many other factors attracted the senior phenom from Stratford to commit to the Longhorns late Thursday night, not the least of which is the program’s perennial high ranking and having one of his best friends already in Austin. “After my last recruiting visit (last weekend) I ended up knowing a lot of the team and getting to hang out with them,” Bayley said.

    The Stratford swimming team got its season off to a good start with a convincing win against Westside Thursday night. The Spartans easily beat the Wolves thanks to a dominant effort from the girls side, as they won 226-69.

          It may be only October, but there’s already a buzz of bringing a state swimming championship to Stratford in 2008-09. That’s the main goal of the Spartan swimming team, who had a great run last year of finishing second at regionals and sending four individual swimmers and two relay teams to the state meet.

The senior – like most of America – has been watching the exploits of the young swimming sensation, and has been amazed with Phelps' poise and performance in the first week of competition.

  One of the bigger summer swimming events in the Houston area is the Ponderosa Invitational, which features several teams from the Houston area and from other parts of Texas like Huntsville and College Station. Held at Klein Collins High School Saturday and Sunday, the two-day event hosts swimming events for children from ages 6-18.

  Carleigh Kutac, a two-time Scholastic All-American and co-captain of the Memorial High School swim team, recently signed a letter of intent to swim at the University of North Texas. Kutac was a five-time district champion and four-time regional finalist for the Mustangs and earned her third all-state selection this year.

  Mayde Creek sophomore swimmer Randal Smith, who placed third in the state meet in two events and qualified on two more relays, headlines local honorees to the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association’s all-state teams released Tuesday. Smith was third in the 50 freestyle and 100 free and was on the qualifying 200 free and 400 free relay teams.

      AUSTIN – True to his personality, Neil Caskey stopped himself from bubbling with joy after winning two individual events Saturday at the University Interscholastic League State Swimming and Diving championships. The Cypress Falls senior held the lead throughout the 200 free (1:37.39) and 100 butterfly (48.97) by, as he put it, keeping himself under control and not going too hard.   “I’m happy with it,” said Caskey, who won the 200 IM and 100 fly titles at the Texas Swim Center last year.

  AUSTIN – Twice the state meet turnout yielded a three-fold increase in returns for the Seven Lakes girls swimming and diving team. A year after finishing eighth at state, the Spartans jumped six places and finished second Saturday at the UIL 4A state meet at the Texas Swimming Center. “To go from eighth-place with four girls to second-place with eight girls … I’m blown away,” Seven Lakes coach Jordan Beck said.

           AUSTIN – Saturday’s finals at the University Interscholastic League Swimming and Diving Championships will be rife with Houston-area competitors. But for all the dominance local teams displayed across the board, the area’s flag is perhaps waving proudest in the diving competition. Five of the top eight boys divers and four of the top eight girls in Friday’s preliminaries at the Texas Swim Center are from metro Houston.

  Karson Applin’s analytical mind doesn’t apply only to engineering and technology. The Carver High School junior, who swims for Eisenhower, throws himself into swimming to the point that he’s studied tapes to help himself improve. Something has paid off this year for Applin, who qualified for this weekend’s UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100 breaststroke and came close in the 100 butterfly.

  Lest any observers think diving defines Chelsea McCorvey, the Memorial senior is quick to say it doesn’t. A diver since seventh-grade who next week will participate in her fourth state championship meet, McCorvey is looking forward to competing at LSU but already says that will cap her career. “I just want to dive in college, then have a regular life,” McCorvey said.

    Seven different girls teams won the first 10 events at Saturday's Region V-5A swimming and diving championships at Don Cook Natatorium, so few were surprised that only five points separated the top three teams entering the 400 medley relay. The third-place team, Langham Creek, was as poised as its targets, first-place Stratford and second-place Fort Bend Clements. "We were right there with Stratford and Clements and I didn't want to tell the girls but I knew they could pull it out," Lobos coach Kris Jones said.

           It’s a tradition for the winning coach at the District 23-5A swimming championships to be pushed into the pool. Saturday at Katy High School, all of Cinco Ranch coach Christie Patterson’s swimmers joined her. The boys couldn’t wait to jump in, and in some cases push each other in. As expected, the Cougars girls won their fifth consecutive district championship.

Judging from their performance in San Antonio this past weekend, Stratford's swimming and diving team is well on their way to achieving its end-of-season goal. The Spartans had a huge weekend at the 2007 Alamo Holiday Championships, taking three individual wins and a fourth-place finish from a 40-school, 420-athlete meet. "We were even missing a few of our top scorers," Spartans coach Michael Hoskovec said.

        Memorial swimming coach Jason Mauss didn’t expect his boys team to edge Fort Bend Hightower by only 11 points Thursday night at Don Cook Natatorium. He did believe, though, that if given the chance his young 400-yard freestyle relay team would hold off Hightower. They did, doing exactly what they needed to secure a 79-68 victory. Sophomores Alex Pujol and Emil Kylzmarkula, junior Cole Hepper and freshman Harrison Robinson edged Hightower’s Marc Isaac, Brandon Brooks, Benjamin Sherman and Deon Taylor by nearly two seconds (3:31.89-3:33.64) in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

  Cinco Ranch District Champion swimmer Morgan Menzie signs to swim for The Ohio State Buckeyes.  Morgan is in the top 3% of her graduating class and earned Scholastic All American Swimmer for the last three years.  She is also an outstanding choir student at CRHS and was an All Region Choir member for 2007.  Morgan was the District Champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle.  Joining Morgan on this great day are:
