Jesuit, Mayde Creek wrestlers ready for tough schedule

Strake Jesuit and Mayde Creek got the wrestling season started on Thursday, and the Crusaders edged the Rams 39-36 in total team points. Both teams are eyeing a district title in a competitive Katy district, and both coaches like what their teams have to offer. “I’m in my second year and we took our kids up to Oklahoma to Gold Wrestling camp and we worked with the Iowa (wrestling) team in June,” Crusaders coach Robert Buley said.

That Cy-Fair wrestling coach Jeremy Lippert wasn't terribly content with a 55-point win to open district competition speaks to the high expectations he has for his team. Eight of the 11 matches against Cypress Springs were decided by pin - with Cy-Fair winning seven - and the Bobcats won three of the four forfeited classes to take a 71-16 victory in the District 17-5A opener for both teams. "We beat a couple of their better guys, which was good, but on the whole we were rushing our falls," Lippert said.

Cinco Ranch's Will McNair has signed with Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina to take his wrestling abilities to the collegiate level. McNair excelled for the Cougars during his four years and has been a big part of the success earned by the CRHS wrestling program including the 2007 State championship. He served as a captain for the Cougar wrestlers and was honored with a CRHS Athletic Booster Club scholarship this spring. We wish the best for Will as he attacks the next phase of his wrestling career and we know he will do a great job.
