Strake Jesuit and Mayde Creek got the wrestling season started on Thursday, and the Crusaders edged the Rams 39-36 in total team points.   Both teams are eyeing a district title in a competitive Katy district, and both coaches like what their teams have to offer.   “I’m in my second year and we took our kids up to Oklahoma to Gold Wrestling camp and we worked with the Iowa (wrestling) team in June,” Crusaders coach Robert Buley said.

    With the state duals only about a week away, teams are battling in local duals in preparation of the big wrestling event where some of the best competition is the region is.   On Thursday night, Katy, Morton Ranch, and Mayde Creek were all on hand for the North Katy Dual at the Merrell Center.

            Cy Fair ISD hosted a wrestling tournament all day Saturday and had more than 30 teams from across the region in attendance.

  Morton Ranch's wrestling team has a dual record of 11-1-1 and has placed in the top five of every tournament they've entered so far this year.   "Our season is going real well," Morton Ranch coach Mark Balser said."We've had quite a bit of success in the various tournaments and duals that we've participated in." The Mavericks' most recent win came at Mayde Creek's Ram Roundup where the overall team took first place, as did five individual wrestlers.

           That Cy-Fair wrestling coach Jeremy Lippert wasn't terribly content with a 55-point win to open district competition speaks to the high expectations he has for his team. Eight of the 11 matches against Cypress Springs were decided by pin - with Cy-Fair winning seven - and the Bobcats won three of the four forfeited classes to take a 71-16 victory in the District 17-5A opener for both teams. "We beat a couple of their better guys, which was good, but on the whole we were rushing our falls," Lippert said.

            The Katy Tiger wrestling team defeated Seven Lakes 54-31 Thursday night, taking all 15 by pin.   Kuhn (140) pinned Denver in round 3.

    Cy-Fair won its first home dual of the 2007 season, 56-15 against St.

  Cinco Ranch's Will McNair has signed with Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina to take his wrestling abilities to the collegiate level.    McNair excelled for the Cougars during his four years and has been a big part of the success earned by the CRHS wrestling program including the 2007 State championship.  He served as a captain for the Cougar wrestlers and was honored with a CRHS Athletic Booster Club scholarship this spring.    We wish the best for Will as he attacks the next phase of his wrestling career and we know he will do a great job.       CUMC and Total Wrestling hosted the first annual ‘The Uncivil War’ dual at Westbriar Middle School on Saturday afternoon.

A lot of great stories unfolded at the UIL State Wrestling meet on Friday and Saturday in Austin.  One such story is that of Adele Kurt, a senior wrestler from Katy Taylor, whose high school career culminated with a state title on Saturday afternoon.
