The Texas High School Lacrosse League held the South Division All Star game Saturday at St. Johns High School. Greater Houston’s finest lacrosse players faced off in this elite match up.
Teams were evenly split into ‘blue’ and ‘yellow’ squads and had a mixture of (High School) Division I and II players. The blue team, after being down 5-1 at one point in the game, came back to win 18-14.
In the Division I category, Episcopal, St. Johns, Kinkaid, Lamar, The Woodlands, Kingwood, and Strake Jesuit all had player representing.
Division II school teams were: Cy Fair, Stratford, Memorial, Katy Taylor, Fort Bend Austin, Bellaire, Clear Lake, and Westside.
According to St John’s lacrosse coach and Texas Development representative Sam Chambers, this game featured the “best of the best in the area.” Majority of the roster players were All-State or All-District selections from this past season.
Not only was this all-star game an opportunity for the Houston lacrosse players to see the field one more time as a high school athlete, but it was also the unofficial tryout for the Texas Development Summer lacrosse team.
Chambers, along with other representatives, were out scouting the talent at hand to build up their roster for the Summer 2007.
“This is a real opportunity for the players to be noticed by college coaches,” Chambers said about the summer team. “We take the kids to several recruiting tournaments. Sometimes the college coaches will come out there and let the kids get the feel of a college practice.
“It really helps the kids with the transition for high school to college.”
