The 2007 UIL State Track and Field Championships took place this past weekend in Austin, Texas. The University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium put the athletes on center stage for them to compete and earn the title of State Champion.
Greater Houston was well represented as many schools had several athletes in various events.
5A Girls
The 800 m. saw Tiffany Singleton, Westside and Shannon Jackson, Westbury finish in third and fourth place. Allison Pye from Cy-Creek out endured her competition in the 1600 m. and the 3200 m. run bringing two gold medals home. Humble’s Karyn LaCour had her steps and timing down in the 100 m. hurdles as she stood at the top of the platform to accept her gold.
The field events had several Houston athletes stand out and make a name for themselves. Brittani Carter jumped over the competition in the High Jump, earning a silver medal with a jump of 6-00.00. Memorial’s Shelley Keller vaulted her way to a medal getting second place in the Pole Vault clearing a height of 11-09.00. The fourth place spots were filled by Tara Prier, Alief Taylor in the Long Jump and Ke'Undra Bishop, Klein Forest in the Triple Jump. Emily Nnockwam from Alief Taylor took the bronze in the Discus with a throw of 132-10.
The girls’ relay teams worked well together, in the 4x100 m. Cy-Springs came in third with a time of 46.47. In the 4x200 m. Klein Forest took the fourth place spot followed by Alief Elsik who came in sixth. Westside finished in fourth place in the 4x400 m. with a time of 3.46.78.
5A Boys
More individual competition was seen off the track as the field events gave more Houston athletes medals. Michael Barbas from Jersey Village went home with a bronze medal in the Shot Put, throwing a distance of 57-03.75 and silver medal in the Discus. After three hops Ugonna Amarikwa, Ft. Bend Hightower jumped his way to a third place finish in the Triple Jump.
Bryan Brown from Humble Kingwood cleared the pole as he vaulted himself to a bronze medal clearing 15-09.00. The Long Jump saw a close competition between Cy-Fair’s Sam McGuffie and Nimitz’s Richard Knotts, McGuffie took second with a jump of 23-10.75 and Knotts finished in third place jumping 23-10.50.
Houston teams defiantly represented in the relays. In the 4x100 m. relay, Klein Forest took the gold, Ft. Bend Hightower took the silver and Eisenhower came in fourth place. The 4x200 m. gave Hightower a gold medal with a time of 1:23.92, Klein Forest a bronze, and Eisenhower again just missed the podium finishing in fourth place.
