In 2004, Jawann McClellan lettered for the fourth year in a row on the varsity basketball team at Milby Senior High School, receiving multiple awards for his extraordinary talent on the hardwood. Jawann played on one of the nation's top AAU teams during off season to improve his skills and compete against the best. It was not a surprise when he was named a McDonald's All-American.
With this much exposure, McClellan received multiple scholarship offers from Division I schools. As for many DI athletes, the decision was a tough one. Ultimately McClellan chose the University of Arizona and traveled to Tucson to become a Wildcat.
McClellan was able to take time out of his busy schedule to do an exclusive interview with The Athlete's Connection. Now as a senior student-athlete, McClellan discussed the joys and challenges of performing at the DI level, giving us an insider's view of what athletes go through on the Division I stage.
This interview gives insight on what an athlete would experience transitioning from high school athletics to the next level.
