As the sun was beating down onto the field, the stands of McCombs Field at the University of Texas were filled with fans decked out in green and purple Friday afternoon.  The Brenham Cubettes battled against the Boerne Greyhounds to determine who would advance to the District 4A State Championship game on Saturday.

The first two innings kicked off the game with no score from either team; however, the sense of competition was evident throughout the stadium. A highlight in the bottom of the third came with a great foul ball catch by one of the fans.

The top of the fourth inning set the path for the Greyhounds to advance to the State Championship game.

Carlee Winkelmann was pitching for the Cubettes. The Greyhound’s third baseman, Ryanne Chapman hit a single to the center field fence which led two runners in, one of which was pitcher Victoria Beltran. The next hit came from, Chelsea Muskopf which resulted in a fielder’s choice throw to home. With a slick slide around the pitcher and the plate, Chapman safely touched home which left the Greyhounds with a 3-0 lead over the Cubettes.

Great pitching from Beltran forced the Cubettes to have three up and three out in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Alex Yarbrough started off the hits by getting on base. Following her lead, Beltran hit a hard grounder to the short stop. For no discernable reason, the short stop did not attempt to get Beltran out at first which allowed her to run safely to the bag while Yarbrough advanced to third.  Such errors made by the Cubettes allowed the Greyhounds to hold on to their three point lead.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, a Brenham fan swiftly caught an out of play foul ball for the second fan based catch of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cubettes began to hit into the outfield, but the Greyhound defense stepped up and had the inning end with one hit and no runs.

With a score of 3-0 the Boerne Greyhounds will advance to the District 4A State Championship game Saturday afternoon at 5:00pm.  The Brenham Cubettes leave the state finals proudly with a bronze medal.
