Sixty male golfers and 24 female golfers were present at Redstone Country Club in Humble, Texas, for the AJGA Fidelity Investments Junior Championships Tournament June 5-7.
This tournament featured the best teenage golfers from more than seven different states. One male golfer came across international waters (Montevideo, Uruguay). Either way, the young golfers battled for three days straight to try and earn the prestigious title of champion.
Not only does the word ‘champion’ have a good ring to it, but this could also be considered a showcase tournament. Several college coaches were in attendance from schools like Rice, Louisiana State, Baylor, Texas, and Texas Tech to name a few.
Thursday morning was Day 3, the finale, and each of the golfers brought their ‘A’ game. In the girls division, Lee Lopez of (Whittier) California was crowned the champion with a three-day score of 211.
At the end of 54 holes (three days of 18), Lopez and Tessa Teachman (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) were tied at 211. A sudden death challenge commenced and Lopez won it after two holes.
For the boys, Fort Worth’s John Peterson won with a three-day score of 206. Peterson, a future LSU Tiger, won this competition after finishing third last year.
Other top finishers for the girls were: Allyson Ferguson from Houston (215), Stephanie Smith from The Woodlands (218), and Amy Ruengmateekhun of Garland (220).
Top boys golfers were: Adam Wennerstrom (Austin, 208), Benjamin Thorseth (Fort Worth, 211), Corey Whitsett (Houston, 213), and Riley Pumphrey (Georgetown, 214).
