The Houston Youth Lacrosse Organization (HYLAX) hosted its fourth annual Elevate Lacrosse Camp at the South Campus fields in Houston this weekend.
Elevate Lacrosse brought in sixty-five lacrosse players this year ranging from ages 8 to 18 and is being taught by ten lacrosse players and coaches from the University of Maryland.
The camp’s focus is to get young Houston athletes involved in lacrosse while allowing more experienced players to maintain their craft throughout the summer, said Katherine Jones, HYLAX summer camp marketing manager.
When the athletes come to this camp, they can expect to learn lacrosse
tips and tricks that would be hard to find elsewhere. A typical camp day
begins with group warm-ups. The campers then break into groups and work on individualized skills. The practices and instruction change daily as the coaches provide an overall skill improving environment for the athletes.
The camp coaching staff is comprised of athletes with a great depth of
lacrosse experience as some have played at national and world levels.
Maryland Coach Jen Adams said that she was thrilled about the ever-growing interest that Texas players are showing for the game of lacrosse. This interest that athletes are exhibiting is the driving force behind her involvement in summer camps.
Adams was an All World Team selection, a member of the 2005 World Cup
championship team for Australia, and a three-time NCAA Player of the Year. Many of the other coaches also have a grand background in lacrosse after having played for the American national team or the Canadian national team.
On a high school level, lacrosse is one of the few sports in Texas that is still not yet UIL sanctioned, which makes the need for these summer camps imperative. Lacrosse is however UIL sanctioned in many states and is growing across the country as more division one universities have launched lacrosse programs.
When HYLAX board member Rocky Jones brought the Elevate Lacrosse Camp to Houston four years ago, his goal was to provide a venue for lacrosse players to work on their skills since there are currently not many
programs in Texas for young players. Since its humble beginning, the camp has now doubled in size as more athletes are learning about lacrosse opportunities.
The 2007 Elevate Lacrosse Camp lasts until this Sunday afternoon. For more information on future HYLAX activities check out: www.hylax.org
