Greater Houston’s top juniors gathered at Rice University’s Reckling Park for the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association Junior All-Star game Wednesday night.

The Blue team against the Red was evenly split up with players from all over Houston and different classes and divisions. After 9 innings of play, the Blue team left the field with an 8-3 victory.

Each team was equipped with seven pitchers who would each have their time to shine on the mound. Pitchers were given a minimum one inning of action.

Blue team pitchers were: Sam Stafford, Klein Collins; Taylor Wall, Westside; Jeff McVaney, Strake Jesuit; Matt Steiner, Morton Ranch; Austin Pruitt, Woodlands College Park; Mo Wiley, Mayde Creek; and Andrew Benak of Langham Creek.

Representing the Red team was: Kendall Thamm, Barbers Hill; Louis Head, Cinco Ranch; Bobby Stone, Montgomery; Matt Juengel, Clear Brook; Michael Turnbull, Katy Taylor; and Austin Dicharry of Klein Collins.

The Blue team started the game with hit bats. Daniel Rumsey (Tomball) opened the game with a triple. Then both Anthony Rendon (Lamar) and Derrick Hawkins (St. Pius) hits RBI doubles to give the Blue team an early 2-0 advantage.

In the second, the Blue lead grew when Brett Thomas (Morton Ranch) hit an RBI single and Rumsey hit a two-RBI double to extend the lead to five.

But the Red would battle back. Nino Lexja (Houston Christian) would be walked. He stole second and reached third on a bad throw. Michael Hutchins (Cinco Ranch) would earn an RBI on a fielder’s choice to put Red on the board.

Red’s pitcher Dicharry would reach base and Jeremy Shafer (Bellaire) would bring him home after an RBI double.

The Blue team would add more runs in the fifth and sixth innings bring their total runs to eight.

Because these baseball players have more grade school eligibility, a high school coach is not allowed to coach them.

For the blue team, coaches from the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Florida Marlins led the team. Red’s coaches were from the Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
