Former Houston Oiler coach Ed Biles and the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association (GHFCA) teamed up for the First Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament Friday morning at Oakhurst Golf Club.
Monies raised from the event will be used for scholarships for the children of GHFCA members. There were 84 golfers present to participate in the event.
After the golfers played their 18 holes of golf, lunch was served while FCA representative John Hensley called out the day’s raffle ticket winners.
Hensley welcomed all of the golfers on behalf of the FCA, and GHFCA President Chris Massey made a formal introduction. Biles took the stage next and talked about the significance of the scholarship awards.
He explained how high school coaches devote so much time to their teams and how their families are more than appreciative to receive those funds towards their children’s college education.
The FCA gave out three awards: the Ed Biles Ring of Honor, the Benny Carter Community Impact Award, and the JT Berger Award.
Coach Ben Hurt was the recipient of the Ed Biles Award. Hurt was honored as one of the outstanding retired coaches in the state. GHFCA Executive Director Les Koening presented his award.
Benny Carter award was given to Klein Collins coach Mike Konicki. Massey honored Konicki, who was recently diagnosed with cancer, for being a great role model for his team and assistant coaches. Konicki expressed thanksgiving for each day and the need for living life to its fullest.
The JT Berger award was given to two student-athletes. The FCA gives this award to athletes who exhibit qualities that exemplify the mission statement of the organization. Westfield athlete Randall Terry was one of the recipients.
Terry’s award was accepted by his coach. Terry died recently from a swimming accident. His coach said Terry’s positive attitude was one of his strong qualities. Coach continued by saying he was admired by both coaches and students.
Tomball’s Taylor Berlin was the other winner. Berlin’s parents accepted his award on his behalf. Berlin left an acceptance letter that was read by his father. Berlin was away at Hardin Simmons University where he plans to play baseball.
As far as the results from the golf tournament, Bob McDaniel (Hole No. 1) and Kal Kellenberger (Hole No. 10) won the longest drive challenge. Brad Dean (No. 17) and Massey (No. 5) were the closets pin winners.
