Mayde Creek High School is playing host to the West Side Triple Threat Invitational basketball tournament with games being played through the weekend.

Friday night and all day Saturday will be pool play to determine the seeding for bracket play occurring on Sunday. Teams from around the city, state, and even some from out of state came to compete in what is a hotbed for talented young athletes and stiff competition.

This weekend’s tournament consists of an NCAA and NBA bracket that is divided up based on skill level (NBA being the higher of the two).

The Houston Lynx and the J. Prince All-stars started pool play off on a good note as both teams earned victories Friday night before a long Saturday of non-stop round ball. The Lynx defeated the Houston Raptors 69-54 and the J. Prince All-stars romped over the Katy Steele 63-48.

These two teams will look to carry some momentum with these wins into tomorrow’s continuance of the tournament.

Sunday brought out the best of the best with bracket play and teams were crunk and ready to ball.

The Westside All-stars won the NCAA gold division with a 50-42 victory over James Prince’s Rap A Lot squad. The All-stars earned their way to the finals with a victory over the clippers in the semi-finals. Westside struggled early on the offensive side of the ball, but never let the Clippers get too far ahead. With little time remaining, the All-stars made a push and knocked down some crucial shots to earn the win. WSA was firing on all cylinders the entire game keeping a double-digit lead throughout the majority of the competition. Rap A Lot made a push with a seven-point swing due to some technical fouls and free throws. However, WSA were able to maintain the lead to earn the victory. Colin Buteaux of WSA had a game high 16 points while teammate Miles Dixon dropped in 12 of his own.

NBA star Rashard Lewis made a presence to support his two local teams who combined for a 5-1 record in the NBA division.
