The 3rd Annual June Explosion started Saturday at Bellaire High School. With three games guaranteed to each of the 20 plus competing teams each team had a chance to play teams from the seven different pools. The teams mostly consisted of 17year old and under and 16year old and under boys but there were two 15and under teams that were trying to make a name for themselves at the tournament.
One of the 15and under teams was the Houston Hoops who took on the 17and under Houston Powerhouse. Powerhouse controlled the first half of the game, hitting three's and overpowering the Hoops. The Hoops did not falter as they stayed close matching Powerhouse's aggressive play and hustled up and down the court. The first half closed with Powerhouse leading 31-25.
The Hoops hit the court ready to play catch up in the start of the second. They started connecting with their shots and closing the gap. The Hoops took advantage of every minute in the second half as they took the lead and put pressure on the Powerhouse. With the clock winding down, Powerhouse hit some crucial three pointers to bring the score within four points. Powerhouse was unable to regain the lead giving the Houston Hoops the win with a final score of 65-61.
Houston Hoops head coach, Greg Peters said, “In the second half we went with a quicker line up because they were shooting a lot of three’s. With us being one of the 15and under teams we were nervous in the beginning but we look forward to the competition with the older boys. I have a great team and great shooters, we play team ball.”
Lead scorer for the Hoops was Marshall Lane and David Linden for the Powerhouse.
On the other court TJ Ford Elite were taking on Total Package. Total Package put the first points on the board but TJ Ford answered back with consecutive baskets. TJ Ford ran the court and controlled the momentum of the game. Total Package entered the second half down 28-17.
Total Package began to find their rhythm in the second half. With Total Package bringing the score within two, TJ Ford stepped up their defense and started making steals. TJ Ford capitalized on the turnovers and Total Packages’ fouls put them on the line to get the win with a final score of 53-47.
