Senior strong safety Mike Luttrell handled business Saturday night against Elsik at Tully Stadium. The Spartans came out looking for a win after their defeat against Cy-Fair 21-6 in Week Zero. The confident Luttrell was determined to do his part to ensure a Spartan victory.
“I just do what I can for my team and play my position the best I can,” Luttrell
respectfully stated when asked about his impressive power and momentum on the field.
Playing both sides of the ball and contributing on special teams, Luttrell rarely left the field. One of his most notable plays came at the end of the third quarter. This versatile athlete caught a screen pass from quarterback Andrew Luck, breaking at least two Ram tackles, for a 60-yard touchdown to put the Spartans ahead in a seesaw battle that was waged by two well-disciplined teams.
The 6-0, 190-pound Luttrell was filling in offensively for some players who were out and maximized each moment on the field. He came in during an unexpected time and stepped up when asked to and contributed big plays to the team.
As a two-year letterman, Luttrell brings experience to the team, which he calls “a big family” and commands respect, not only from his fellow players, but also from his coach.
“Mike is a leader and does whatever he is asked to do,” Coach Eliot Allen said. “He is a great young man who brings a lot to the team and can play anywhere on the field. Luttrell could easily play college ball.”
Luttrell humbly gave credit to the offensive line for being “amazing” and also praised teammates Luck and John Sorsby for spreading it out and providing opportunities for him to earn yardage.
With Luttrell giving his 110 percent and the Spartan camaraderie that binds the team on and off the field, the season has all the potential of success.
Be on the look out for Luttrell and the Spartans as they enter week two facing a tough Spring football team at George Stadium.
