On Tuesday, the second annual Texas Legends Junior Tour, taking place at the Deerwood Country Club, finished off one of two tournaments to be held this week. Monday and Tuesday’s tournament included the 12-14 boys age group as well as boys 15-18. There was also a girls division consisting of girls ages 12-18.
Age, however, is not the determining factor for tournament competition. The participants are divided based on skill level rather than age group.
“These participants are divided by handicaps rather than age,” explained Legends Tour coordinator, Dave Prinz. “Many times younger kids can play up with the older kids if they are talented enough.”
The Legends Tour hosts 24 events statewide each year for players who are considered elite golfers. Golfers sign up according to their handicap, and if they perform well enough to make the cut, the participant may continue to be a member of the Legends Club.
“It’s first-come, first-served,” said Prinz. “However, if the players are not able to hang with the competition they will lose their membership. But that rarely happens.”
A good number of these kids will have the talent to play at the collegiate level -- not all, but some,” said Prinz.
Trent Redfern out of Austin Westlake finished first in the boy's 15-18 division shooting -4 in 36 holes while Wes Artac from Kingwood, finished first in the boys 12-14 division with a +6. For the girls it was Dina Obrien out of Katy who came in at the top with a +15.
