The Stratford Spartans 7-on7 squad has been chosen as The Athlete's Connection Team of the Week. The Spartans have represented Houston and the state of Texas in two well-played 7-on-7 tournaments, state-wide and nationally.

Stratford went undefeated in the state tournament in College Station until they fell to Georgetown in the championship game. However, the Spartans would earn that one back as they dropped Georgetown in the national tournament in a 27-26 overtime victory.

In the national tournament, Georgetown and Stratford represented Texas well as they faced off against teams from Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, and California. The Spartans finished 2-2 in California to earn third place overall.

Credit to Kyle Mosley and Ryan Craig who stepped up and coached these young men, as young men themselves. Due to UIL rules, Texas is not allowed to have staff coaches on the sideline as the other states are. “It was pretty exciting to match up against head coaches like that,” explained Mosley. “Although it’s 7-on-7 and there is only so much you can do as a coach, it’s still fun to see a team that is run by nothing but the kids facing off against a team that is well organized with their coaches.”

Congratulations to Stratford and Georgetown on representing the great state of Texas in the national event. In addition to how well these teams played, they showed class and integrity on and off the field to honor the true character of Texas football.

Mosley went on to comment on the maturity of this team as they handled themselves in a very grown-up manner.

“There is really no age difference between the coaches and the players but they all came together and acted right with very little adult supervision.”

"I think this is a good sign of how we are going to be next year. We should be pretty good.”
