As the cross-country runners of District 19-5A prepared for their annual competition, they may not have factored in what would happen the day of the meet.
With heavy rainfall for the majority of the day, the terrain was slick and slippery on North Harris College’s grass fields on Thursday afternoon.
Runners were slipping, sliding, and nearly falling down because there was no traction and so much mud. On average, many runners’ times were affected anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute.
This, along with high humidity levels, was not enough to discourage the runners from competing. So the show went on.
In the girls division, the Memorial team came out victorious with a score of 23. The Lady Mustangs entered the competition heavily favored. Stratford was second with 42, and MacArthur third with 90.
Individual winners were: Stratford’s Shannon Linderman with a time of 12:14.92. Memorial’s Elizabeth Gilbert and Helene Delone took second and third respectively.
The Memorial boys’ team, which was predicted to finish third or fourth, won the meet with a score of 39. Second place Nimitz scored 47 and Stratford/MacArthur, third, with 73. The results are tabulated off of the the Top 5 finishes, but in the event of a tie the sixth place is the wild card.
Stratford's Charles Gentry placed higher than the MacArthur sixth runner so the Spartans will particpate at Regionals.
Top runners for the boys were: Jorge Castillo from MacArthur with a time 16:25.38. Nimitz runner Juan Ruiz took second and Stratford’s Dylan Roberts was third.
The Top 3 teams and Top 10 individual runners advance to the Region III competition set for Saturday, Nov. 4 at North Harris College. The event is set to start at 8 a.m. For full listings of results, see below.
