Bryan and College Station played host to more than 130 summer league softball teams in the USA/ASA 18-under Fast Pitch National Championship. This event began on July 29 and will run through Sunday, August 5.
This tournament will be played at four different locations including Veteran’s Park, Central Park, Bryan Athletic Complex, and Texas A&M University’s Aggie Field.
Teams were split into pools with four teams. Pool play began on Monday and played through Tuesday. Each will play a total of three games in pool play and the pool winner, along with the others, will move to bracket play.
Once a pool winner is named, bracket will commence. Teams are seeded according to how they finished in pool play. Bracket play starts on Wednesday.
The Athlete’s Connection was on location at Veteran’s Park Tuesday afternoon and caught a trifecta of softball action. Here are the results of the games covered.
Texas Hawks (Spring, Texas) vs. West Bay Nuggets (Castro Valley, California)
West Bay’s infield players, including pitcher Sarah Sedlack, made the tough defensive plays look easy as the Nuggets shut out the Hawks 4-0.
Nuggets’ Joan Cannon earned an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the second inning scoring Sabina Khan. In the fifth, Lacey Parodi hit an RBI double to bring in Kelly Kiefer.
As the California parents screamed, ‘more runs’ it was evident the girls were listening. Megan Ramirez fired things up in the sixth with a double and Cannon got an RBI when reached base on an error scoring Ramirez.
Cy Fair Blaze (Cypress, Texas) vs. America’s Pastime* (Rancho Cucamonga, California)
In an all out pitcher’s duel featuring Blaze’s Callie Darlin against Pastime’s Melinda Campbell, the California girls took a 2-1 victory from under Texas in extra innings.
The game went all the way to nine innings and it was quite evident that it was all about the defense in this one.
St Louis Lasers* (Missouri) vs. Texas Travelers (Van, Texas)
It did not take long for the Midwest team to shut down the Travelers with an 11-2 victory. Early on both teams were hitting well and getting on bases. But in the end, the Lasers capitalized on a few more opportunities.
The game lasted five innings.
