For the third year in a row, the South Team has beaten the North in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game at TCU's Amon Carter Stadium. The South team left Ft. Worth victorious by a score of 14-0, marking the first time in 26 years a shutout was recorded in the All-Star Game.
Cypress Falls quarterback Jeff Welch led two scoring drives on his way to being named offensive MVP of the contest. He went 9-21 with 102 yards through the air in addition to five rushes for 28 yards on the ground. The South scored on the opening drive of the game when Welch handed off to McAllen Memorial's Bradley Stephens for a two yard score, and hit paydirt again on a Welch pass to Hempstead's Chris Tate. Stephens will be suiting up for Texas A&M, while Tate will be a UH Cougar.
Welch, who signed with Sam Houston Sate, earned his spot on the All-Star Team with a spectacular season behind center for Cy Falls, leading them all the way to the Class 5-A Division II State Championship Game the previous fall, where they lost to Cedar Hill High School.
The defensive effort by the South was equally impressive, as they only allowed 138 yards of total offense to the North and kept them from completing a pass until the fourth quarter.
Representing the South with the defensive mvp award was Sweeny's Ricky "Tank" Carder who was all over the field with 12 tackles, 1 interception, and 1 sack in addition to kicking the extra points for the offense.  Hutto's Jeremy Kerley registered another interception for the South, and he will be joining Carder at TCU this fall.
The North's offense was led by SMU signee Logan Turner of Springtown at quarterback, who struggled against the South's stout defense, and highlighted by the appearance of Tray Allen at guard. The 6-4 310-pound Allen was ranked the No. 16 recruit in his class for the entire country and will be sporting a burnt orange jersey at UT.
Another University of Texas signee, Keenan Robinson out of Plano East, spearheaded the North's defensive effort with four solo tackles.
Wimberly High School Head Coach Weldon Nelms and his staff coached the South to victory, while Sweetwater High School's Kent Jackson brought his crew to Fort Worth to instruct the North squad.
