JCC of Houston hosts the Maccabi Games

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Houston will be hosting the Maccabi Games August 5-10, 2007.  These Olympic style sporting events are held each summer in North America, and have been uniting Jewish teens since 1982.

The Maccabi Games have  earned the distinction of becoming the world's largest organized sporting program for Jewish teen athletes.  However, this program did not blossom overnight. The Games began as one pilot project in a single host community in 1982. Now, the games have proudly grown to accommodate over 5,000 12-16 year old athletes.

Thousands of Jewish athletes around the world have taken part in the Maccabi Games. Some former athletes who are now in college are still in touch with friends that they made at the games. In addition, many of our own Houston alumni have returned to serve as coaches for Team Houston.

Four times in the past eleven years, the city of Houston has served as the host city for the JCC Maccabi Games. We salute this annual event as it reaches out to Jewish teen athletes, not only in in a sports capacity, but also in a spiritual aspect which carefully integrates competitive sports with Jewish values.
