As summer is winding down, the majority of summer athletics has concluded to allow athletes to start preparing for the school year. However, the Houston Golf Association is still in full swing as they started day one of the two-day Tournament of Champions on Monday at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas.

This tournament is one of nearly 70 tournaments the HGA hosts during the summer, but this one brought out the best of the best. The competitors in this competition are in the top 10% of the participants of the HGA, which has been determined by their play in previous tournaments.

The Houston Golf Association has over 1200 participants making the playing field quite competitive. Players were broken up into three categories of play with two boy’s divisions of 14-15 and 16-18 and one girls division of 15-18.

These tournaments hosted by the HGA provide student golfers a chance to compete against other top golfers during the summer. It’s very similar to AAU basketball or select baseball. Anyone can sign up to compete no matter their skill level, however the elite competitors will earn their chance to shine with tournaments such as this one.

“The HGA gives athletes a way to stay in competitive golf all through the summer,” said tournament director Bill Walker. “It’s also a good way for these kids to play against other top golfers in the region.”

The 60-70 tournaments the HGA hosts during the summer consists mainly of Greater Houston Area athletes, but some do travel from as far as Louisiana to compete. Although they compete mainly during the summer, they do host a few tournaments during the school year as well.
