The 14th Annual Texas Warm-Up Cup was underway today at Meyer Park out in Spring, TX. The cup serves as a warm-up for club teams to prepare themselves for the upcoming Premier League, which begins September 1st.

The teams that were competing are considered some of the best club teams in the region and range from the U11-U19 divisions.

“This tournament is one of the better tournaments that premier teams play in,” said Houston Texans head coach Scott James. “Teams will come from all over the state and even out of state to play.”

James went on to say that even a team from Monterey, Mexico made the trip to come play in this tournament. In today’s game, Scott’s team finished in a 1-1 tie with against the Fury. They will possibly play two games tomorrow as they are behind schedule due to weather conditions from yesterday and today.

Although this was just a warm-up, collegiate scouts were in attendance to witness the skills some of the older teams.

“A lot of the kids prefer to play on these club teams rather than their high school teams because they know they will have a better chance of being recruited,” explained Scott.

Tournaments such as these provide an opportunity for the winning teams to travel to other parts of the country to play against other talented teams from different regions. However, because this is just a warm-up, the winner does not earn that chance just yet.

“It’s a lot of fun to come out here and play with some of the best competition in the region,” said Lafayette Fury forward Chase Moreau. “It’s really exciting but at the same time it can be stressful because you know scouts could be watching.”

The tournament will continue tomorrow but with modified scheduling due to weather delays from Saturday’s competition.
