The Cy-Fair Bobcats are coming into the 2007 season after a successful campaign last year that ended in the Regional Semi-finals falling to the Pearland Oilers. Losing 18 starters to graduation, the Bobcats are in much better shape than one might expect. Besides the return of Michigan commit Sam McGuffie, Cy-Fair should have what it takes to make another run deep into the playoffs.
Mcguffie will be running behind returning letterman Wesley Cobb who will lead the way at the fullback position. Although they return only one starting offensive lineman, Coach Ed Pustejovsky has high hopes for the younger players stepping in.
“We have had a really good off-season that looks very promising,” said Pustejovsky. “These kids worked hard all summer and came back in playing shape.”
The defense will return starters Austen Wozniak at the defensive end position as well as Michael Elliott in the secondary. At the linebacker position, Daniel Moose and Michael Daronch are looked at to lead the defense as each had playing time last season.
Though this team has it’s fair share of publicity not only due to the success of the team but also for the high profile Mcguffie who has receive a great deal of attention during the off-season. However, the Bobcats are not letting that serve as a distraction.
“Sam and the rest of the team has handled the attention very well,” explained Pustejovsky. “These kids are focused on winning and are willing to do what it takes.”
When asked about their television debut with district rival Cy-Falls, Coach Pustejovsky made it clear that they were not focusing on that right now.
“We haven’t even talked about it much.” “We are focusing on our first game against Stratford right now because that is where our number one concern is at the moment.”
The Bobcats will run a similar offense to what they have been running with their power-I set that gives McGuffie several options out of the backfield. With the amount of success McGuffie had last year, keying defenses will likely open up the passing game for quarterback Gavin West.
