This week’s game of the week is a no brainer as two of the nation’s top offensive performers collide when Stratford hosts Cy-Fair on Thursday night. Stratford’s Andrew Luck will hope his dual threat abilities will be enough to out last Cy-Fairs ground attack led by Sam McGuffie.
In last year’s match up, it was actually more of a defensive battle as the Bobcats outlasted the Spartans in a 21-6 victory. McGuffie gained 281 yards on the ground in 32 attempts and one touchdown. Luck on the other hand did his damage in the air throwing for 258 yards with a rushing touchdown. However, the Bobcats came up big defensively when it counted to keep the Spartans out of the end zone.
This week’s match up will be similar, yet different. Although these two superstars will go head-to-head one last time, the supporting casts behind them are completely different than last year.
The Bobcats return only two additional starters on offense and two on defense. Left guard Chris Lathrop and tight end Colby Goodwin are good starters to have returning, as they will need the experience on the offensive line to plow the way for McGuffie. Another plus for the Bobcats is that the two returning starters on defense, Austin Wozniak and Michael Elliott, are both secondary players. Cy-Fair will need good leadership and communication back there to stop Luck’s deadly passing game.
Speaking of Luck, who had an arsenal of targets to throw to last year, will be looking for some new receivers to sling the rock to. Luck has one of his favorite targets returning in B.J. Griffin (16-341), but loses two standout receivers in John Sorsby and A.J. Daggett.
This week’s match up should be exciting as these two teams have interesting match ups. This game could possibly come down to which coach has the better defensive scheme planned out. I believe Cy-Fair has the upper hand going in, but with two well-coached teams this ought to be a game you can’t afford to miss.
The game will be Thursday at Tully Stadium 7:30 p.m.
Hicks’ prediction:
Cy-Fair-31
Stratford-24
