As preparation for the Labor Day Classic begins, the Touchdown Club of Houston hosted a luncheon for the Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M football teams at the Power Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Founder Sonny Sowell opened the program up by welcoming everyone to the event. He spoke briefly about the history of the organization. Sowell, who is the only surviving founder, reminisced about the other past members who contributed to the TD Club.

The event emcee was George Thomas. Recording artist Barbara Tucker sang the national anthem and tribute was given to the late coach Eddie Robinson. Earl Jimmison spoke about the weight room project and The Defender Sports Editor Max Edison presented the Special Achievement Service Awards.

TSU’s Audrey Ford and Prairie View’s George Higgs were the recipients. Then, TD Club president Charles McClellan took over to announce the event speaker, Kirbyjon Caldwell.

Caldwell, a local pastor and minority owner of the Houston Texans, spoke a brief message. He spoke on the Michael Vick situation and knowing and understanding yourself.

Both ADs (Alois Blackwell, TSU; McClellan, PVAMU) and coaches (Steve Wilson, TSU; Henry Frazier III, PVAMU) spoke about their respective programs and the upcoming rivalry game between the two schools.

The Labor Day Classic will be played at Reliant on September 1 at 7 p.m.
