Second Baptist started their district play with a win against Lutheran North tonight, winning the match 3-0. Lutheran put up a good fight as their blockers earned a few points for the Lions, but the Eagles’ defense came together for the win.

“I hate playing them. They’re always good. They always come out and have a good team,” said laughing, Sue Berg, Second Baptist head coach.

Second Baptist took an early five-point lead in game 1 but Lutheran North serves brought them within one, 9-8. The Eagles regained their lead as Amber Calhoun had a big kill to put them ahead by six-points. With Second Baptist ahead 20-18, Lutheran North wasn’t giving up. The Lions stayed close but lost the game, 25-20.

The Eagles kept their winning momentum going as Kendall Burgess served game 2’s first six points. The Eagles remained in the lead with the score, 12-7. Then Lutheran’s Ellie Murdock served three aces to tie the score at 13. Eagles’ Burgess answered with five scoring serves, including two aces, to take the lead. Second Baptist won game 2, 25-19.

Lutheran North’s Nicole White served the Lion’s first five points, but the Eagles caught up tying it at 6. Calhoun had a huge kill to give the Eagles the lead. The score was a one-point difference until Second Baptist broke out and took the lead. At the end of the game, Second Baptist was ahead by two-points as Calhoun hit a kill ending the game 25-20, and giving Second Baptist the match, 3-0.

“We’ve been working on defense and I think we made improvements in that area. Normally our breakdown is in passing and we did a good job of that. We’re seeing improvements in the things we are working on in practice, so we’re happy with that,” said Berg.

Second Baptist’s next game is Tuesday as they go for 2-0 in district.
