The first annual Spring Branch Water Polo Tournament took place on Saturday at the Spring Branch Natatorium. Memorial and Mustang head coach, Jason Mauss, hosted the four-school, eight-team tournament.
Games began at 8:00 am and ended around 6:00 pm as Memorial, Stratford, Cy-Falls, and Tomball battled it out in the water.
The Athletes Connection made its way out to the games to see the action. In games 1 and 2, Memorial played Cy-Falls. The women played first as Cy-Falls defeated the Mustangs, 10-4. But that was not the case for the men.
In game 2, Memorial defeated the Eagles, 13-7.
Games 3 and 4 were Spartan Water Polo versus Tomball. The Spartans’ women worked well together as they put up 12 points. Caitlyn Witt was the lead scorer and Erin Pence had a great defensive game as goalie, only allowing Tomball 6 goals. The men of Spartan Water Polo did not do as well as the women against the Cougars. Tomball defeated the Spartans, 6-2.
Memorial took on Tomball in games 5 and 6 as the men and women again had different outcomes. The women of Memorial put up six points, but that was no match to the Cougars’ nine.
The men’s match between these two schools was the best of the day. Tomball jumped ahead 2-1. Then they scored again. Memorial came back and scored two quick goals to tie. It was 5-5 in the fourth quarter as Memorial shot their last goal into the net for the win.
The Spartan men and women played and defeated Cy-Falls in games 7 and 8, 13-6 and 14-6.
The round-robin style tournament continued with Tomball versus Cy-Falls and would end with Memorial versus Spartan Water Polo.
Host and Memorial head coach, Jason Mauss said, “These teams are young. They’ve only been playing a few years. One thing this tournament does is help them get ready for swimming.”
Mauss went on to say, “We appreciate everything you guys [Athletes Connection] do for this sport. It’s great that you are out here.”
