Luke Phillips, of St. John's School, has been named Athlete of the Week for his performance in last Friday night's game versus Episcopal.

The Mavericks defeated the Knights 35-28 with a game-winning touchdown and a victory that brings their record to 3-0. The senior, who is both a running back and defensive back, did it all Friday night to help lead his team to that long awaited win.

“I think Episcopal has won about five straight on us now and this is my senior year, my last chance, and this is the greatest feeling,” said Phillips.

Phillips scored the Mavericks first touchdown with a 45-yard run to tie the score in the first quarter. He rushed for multiple first downs throughout the game. Phillips had one interception in the third quarter to stop Episcopal and ran the ball back 30-yards. In the fourth quarter, as Episcopal looked like they were going to score again, Phillips stepped up for his second interception.

After the Mavericks fifth touchdown, the Knights were looking to score. Episcopal  threw the ball down field into the hands of Luke Phillips, who knocked it down, killing any chance of going into overtime. Phillips had his hands on the ball to start the game and had his hands on the ball to end it.

Phillips had 81 yards rushing and receiving with one touchdown and two interceptions.

St. John's will try to keep their undefeated record this Friday night in Oklahoma as they take-on Holland Hall.

“Last year was a defensive battle, they won 3-0, so I know we can hang with them. I’m expecting a victory,” said Phillips.
