The Casady Cyclones took charge of the SPC field hockey tournament in Forth Worth, sweeping the competition to capture the conference title.
The Cyclones won their two games on Thursday against All Saints Academy and Hockaday to advance to the Division-1 championship. The Cyclones would have their hands full against the returning conference champs Country Day School.
Casady took the early lead as Eleanor Isaacs scored in the first half for the Cyclones to give them a 1-0 lead. They took the lead into half time but the Country Day Falcons were not giving up.
The Cyclones took their tenacious defense into the second half, but Falcon forward Ashley Espy was able to break away from the defense and put a point on the board for the Falcons with 12 minutes left to play.
Both defenses stepped it up from there giving up no points sending the game into overtime. Neither team gave up a score in the ten-minute overtime period, which sent the game into a 1v1 shootout.
Country Day had the first offensive chance, but was unable to capitalize. A goal on the next shot would give the Cyclones the victory if they were able to convert.
Senior Leigh McCoi was able to do just that, securing the victory and the SPC title for the Cyclones.
“We had 11 seniors who were really dedicated to this team,” explained Casady’s Coach Erickson. “These girls practiced really hard so they could play really hard.”
This was a big victory for the Cyclones as Country Day had defeated them earlier in the season in a 2-1 victory.
Congratulations to Casady and Country Day on an exciting championship game that kept the fans on the edge of their seat until the very end.
