The Spring Branch ISD cross-country meet was held at Nottingham Park early Saturday morning. Amongst the runners were enthusiastic parents, coaches, and supporters.
About 20 teams participated in Saturday’s event. Among those teams were Strake Jesuit, Katy, Stratford, Memorial and Westfield. Teams were due at the event by 7:30am for an 8:00 AM start. Varsity boys began the first race of the day, followed by the varsity girls, junior varsity boys, junior varsity girls, and finishing up with the freshman boys. Each race lasted around twenty minutes. The boys ran a 5000-meter race and the girls a two-mile race.
As the runners reached the finish line, they were greeted with medals and place cards. The teams that showed the most talent and endurance were Stratford, Strake Jesuit, Memorial, and Friendswood. Memorial's varsity girls had a spectacular run, achieving a perfect score in the competition. They took first place in the race as a team, with their runners taking first through fifth place, impressing the crowd and the timers.
Strake Jesuit was also crowd-pleasing, placing first in the boys varsity, boys junior varsity, and boys freshman competition. The Memorial Mustangs' varsity boys just missed first by two points.
The Athlete's Connection caught up with Memorial Mustang Coach Danny Jones after the meet. “The guys ran one of their best races of the season. We've got to keep improving. [Strake Jesuit] is the team to beat, and I think we can get them. We are working on our times and keeping them down as the season goes on.”
