St. Johns ended their field hockey season on a good note as they defeated Episcopal 2-0 to capture fifth place in the SPC tournament.
The Mavericks suffered a tough 4-0 loss against Country Day in their first game, but bounced back and won their next two. It just so happens that rival Kinkaid would be one of those games.
“Our girls were sick and had a rough morning,” explained Maverick’s Coach Chambers. “But we bounced back and played a great game against Kinkaid.”
St. Johns defeated the Falcons in a 1-0 overtime victory when the Mavericks capitalized on a penalty corner. Mavericks’ Kelley Harrison received the corner and hesitated her pass giving ample time for Hallie Crawford to find an opening in the Falcon defense. Crawford received Harrison’s pass at the top of the circle and put the ball in the goal to give St. Johns the victory.
“This was a great victory for us because we had lost twice to them earlier in the season,” said Chambers.
With victories over Episcopal and Kinkaid, the Mavericks earned the right to claim the SPC South championship distinction.
The mavericks will lose 12 seniors to graduation but look to their juniors to step up and fill in for those graduating.
“We have several juniors who are ready to step up and fill the leadership roles,” stated Chambers.
The Mavericks are excited to return Kelley Harrison and Katherine Franklin who should be dominant players next season.
