St. John’s School defeated Episcopal, 4-2, in field hockey Wednesday afternoon in a Southwest Preparatory Conference game. It was a defensive game in the first half as not a single goal was scored. The second half had all the offense.

As the thirty-minute half began, Episcopal controlled the ball, keeping it in St. John’s territory for 1:30. Both the Knights and the Mavericks looked fast on the field, taking the ball from goal to goal. In the first ten minutes of the game, each team got close to scoring, but the opponents’ defense was right there to shoot the ball away. St. John’s controlled the ball mostly in the second ten minutes, but came up short in scoring.

The ten-minute halftime was a chance for the women to catch their breaths. In the game of field hockey, the women are constantly running. And on a beautiful Houston day like Wednesday, it was hot out there on the field. In that time, the coaches must have given inspiring speeches to the women because the game switched from defense to offense.

Just five minutes into the second half, Catherine Franklin from St. John’s School scored the first goal of the game. Franklin was assisted by Charlotte Iupe. The Mavericks led 1-0.

The Mavericks scored again as Alexandra Berkman scored the goal, assisted by Captain Jessica Chen. The second goal came nine minutes after the first.

The Episcopal Knights weren’t going to be shutout. Drew Cowan scored the Knights’ first goal at 13:26 to trail the Mavericks by one goal.

Franklin got the opportunity to score again and she took it. She was assisted by Captain Carolyn Prioleau. That goal gave St. John’s School a 3-1 lead.

But Episcopal came back and scored another as Emily Dobrowski assisted Lizz Dye for the Knight’s second. Episcopal trailed by one goal at minute 5:37.

Then with under two-minutes left in the game, Captain Sarah Jewett assisted Captain Chen for the Mavericks final goal and the victory.

“The whole game wasn’t really normal for us. But you know you have games like that. They pulled it together finally and got it done. This was an important win,” St. John’s head coach Craig Chambers said.

St. John’s School defeated Episcopal High School 4-2. This win put the undefeated Mavericks at 11-0 on the season and 4-0 in the SPC. The Mavericks face Duchesne next.
