A dominating second half was the deciding factor to help the Kinkaid field hockey team beat Duchesne Academy (4-3) by the score of 3-1 Thursday night at Charger Field. The Falcons are 5-2 on the season and are much more confident in the way they are working together as a team.
“We are happy to pick up this win,” Kinkaid coach Jessica McClain said. “As a team, we were looking for consistency. We just got back from a tournament in Austin and we played a very team-oriented game. We look to keep that going.”
The first half was clearly a defensive struggle. While Kinkaid seemed to be vibing on the aggressive game play of captain Emily Burke, all of the attempts at the goal were unsuccessful.
Both goalies, Jordan Robinson (Kinkaid) and Analissa Moreno (Duchesne), held their own by blocking all attempts at the net. With just seconds remaining in the first half, the Chargers’ Kate Ruddy hit a hard shot towards the goal that just missed. So the teams went into halftime with the game scoreless.
“This is a tough place for us to play,” McClain said of Duchesne’s field. “It was just nice for us to put some balls in the net.”
And that is exactly what they did. Kinkaid broke the stalemate when Burke set up Claire Bailey to score the game’s first goal. Four minutes later, Bailey passed to Elaine Thurman and she slipped pass the Charger defense to score a second goal.
At the 17 minute mark, Kinkaid’s Alex Salinas scored the Falcons’ third and final goal. But Duchesne did not roll over. After a penalty shot goal was negated due to a fault, Duchesne’s Christie Larroucau scored the only goal for the Chargers.
