Memorial meets Mayde Creek in first swim meet of season

The butterfly and freestyle are just two strokes Memorial and Mayde Creek competed in Thursday evening. The two schools faced each other in 24 events at the Spring Branch Natatorium in the first meet of the season.

The meet started with 1 meter Diving. Rachel Moody and Jesus Tobias, both from Memorial, each dove six times. Moody’s best scores were 5, 5 and 5. Tobias’ best scores were 4, 4.5 and 4.5. As the divers were diving, all swimmers sat very attentively around the diving board, cheering on their teammates.


The swimming began with women’s 200-yard medley relay, which is a four person team, with one person swimming the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and finishing with the freestyle. Memorial placed first with a time of 2:02.19. Mayde Creek came in second and the Mustangs finished third.

Next, the men competed in the same relay and Memorial placed first at 1:53.25. The Mustangs also came in second and the Rams finished third with a time of 2:03.65.

In the 200 freestyle, Mustang Alexis Bushong finished first in heat 1 at 2:21.66. Bushong’s teammate, Catherine Wagner, placed first in heat 2 at 2:00.42. For the men, Mustang Jay Rockwell placed first with a time of 2:02.15.

The 200 IM-Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle had three heats. Katie Klein of Memorial placed first with a time of 2:49.02 in heat 1. Carleigh Kutac, also from Memorial finished first in heat 2 at 2:18.96. Mustang John Wagner placed first for the men with a time of 2:02.97.

In the 50 freestyle, Mustang Alexis Pennington finished first in heat 1 at 28.89. Teammate Kristin Rollins finished at 26.08 for first place in heat 2. Mayde Creek’s Randal Smith placed first for the men with a time of 22.42.

Kutac placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.04. and Smith placed first for the men at 55.06. There were three heats for the 100 freestyle. Mustang Hattie Brazoltin placed first at 1:06.70.

 

Teammate Kristin Rollins finished first with a time of 56.04 in heat 2. Ram Tim Jones placed first for the men with a time of 49.28.


The longest race of the meet was the 500 Yard Freestyle. Wagner finished first for the women with a time of 5:25.30.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Memorial took first for the women, finishing at 1:43.81. Mayde Creek finished first for the men with a time of 1:31.15.


Lauren Miller and Hannah Cooper both placed first in the 100 backstroke. Miller’s time was 1:15.84 and Cooper’s time was 1:07.84. Mayde Creek’s Taylor Nichols had a time of 56.41, fast enough to place first for the men.

The Mustangs owned the 100 breaststroke as Moody (1:22.84), Zoe Bond (1:14.90), and Cody Brown (1:12.51) all placed first in their heats.

The final two events were the men’s and women’s 400 freestyle relay. Memorial, with a time of 4:02.13, finished it up for the women and Mayde Creek took it home for the men at 3:25.79.


“They [Memorial] have a lot more depth than we do, especially in the girls, but for our first swim meet, I’m really proud of everybody. They had really great times for the beginning of the year,” Mayde Creek head coach Wendell Smith said.
