THE WOODLANDS - Runners from across Texas converged Friday and Saturday at The Woodlands High School for the 2007 Nike South Cross Country Invitational.
More than 20 top high schools participated in the event amidst rainy conditions much of the morning.
The day started with the Varsity Elite Boys race. Placing first was Southlake Carroll High School’s Colby Lowe who ran a 4:54 mile and overall time of 15:16.7. Placing second was Lowe's teammate, C.J. Brown, who ran a 4:59 mile and an overall time of 15:34.5.
Coming in third was Craig Lutz from Marcus High School, who ran a 5:03 mile and got an overall time of 15:45.8. Coming in fourth place was Lockhart High School’s Rory Tunningley who ran a 5:06 minute mile and earned an overall time of 15:55.2. Placing fifth was Reed Connor from The Woodlands, running a 5:07 mile and a overall time of 15:57.2.
The Athlete's Connection talked to the Mission High School boys cross country team and the entire team wasn’t focused solely on winning, they were focused on “giving it their all and doing their absolute best.”
The boys showed their potential, but the girls were right there with them running just as hard.
Placing first for the girls Varsity Elite was Lauren Smith, a junior from Brazoswood High School. Smith, who has been running cross country since her freshman year of high school, said she has been training for this event for over four months and plans to run cross country in college. Smith ran a 5:52 mile and an overall time of 18:18.1.
Placing second was Brittany Robertson from Alvin High School, running a 5:55 mile and a complete time of 18.27.2. Coming in third was Kingwood High School’s Kristen Hanselka with a 5:56 mile and an overall time of 18:32.2. Placing fourth was The Woodlands; own Sarah Andrews who ran a 5:58 mile and got an overall time of 18:37.1. Placing fifth was Tara Upshaw from Southlake Carroll. Upshaw ran a flat 6-minute mile and an overall time of 18:42.8.
