The women of St. John’s field hockey defeated Duchesne, 4-1, Tuesday night in a match that wasn’t determined until the end of the second half.

All game, St. John’s took the offense and Duchesne had the defense.

After only three minutes of play, St. John’s junior, Brooke Schuler put the ball in the goal for the first score of the game.

But Duchesne quickly answered with a goal of its own, tying the non-conference game at 1.

The first half played out as St. John’s controlled the ball, used the open space, and had great passing. Duchesne had great defense around the goal, keeping St. John’s to only one goal the first half.

The next goal didn’t come until 12:52 in the second when St. John’s sophomore, Catherine Franklin put it in.

The Mavericks kept the ball on Duchesne’s side of the field, scoring two more goals. Sophomore Charlotte Iupe scored the third goal at 4:07 and junior Phoebe Massey scored the final goal on the last play of the game, giving St. John’s the win, 4-1.

Coach Craig Chambers spoke of the hard time the women had scoring.

“It was very crowded in the 16’. And it’s hard to get the ball in when it’s crowded. But we adjusted at halftime to come back and score three more goals.”

Tuesday’s win puts the Mavericks at 12-0-0 on the season; they remain 4-0-0 in the SPC. St. John’s faces St. Mary’s Hall of San Antonio this Friday.
