“Momentum is a scary thing,” said Episcopal’s head coach, Kathy Coe. That’s what she said after winning game 5, 21-19. Episcopal came out strong; winning the first two games, then fell to Kinkaid in the next two games. Game 5 was determined by who had the momentum, and at the end of the game, Episcopal got it and won, 3-2.
Episcopal and Kinkaid were tied at three. Knight, Amanda Reese had a kill to take the lead by two, 5-3. Teammate Rebecca Wright had a kill to make it 6-3. Kinkaid scored, giving them four points. Episcopal scored four more, making it 13-4. Then Reese had a big block to take a ten point lead. The score jumped to 23-10, and on Kelsie Osato’s kill, Episcopal won game 1, 25-11.
Episcopal’s Reese had a kill to take the lead in game 2, 3-2. The Knights scored seven and the Falcons score four, 10-6. Wright served an ace then Reese did the same to put the Knights ahead, 24-12. Episcopal won the game, scoring the 25th point on another Reese ace.
In game 3, Kinkaid took its first lead of the match, 3-2, when the server served an ace. The Falcons held the lead the rest of the game. Kinkaid served four aces consecutively, bringing the score to 9-4. A block by Episcopal’s Lisa Wojnar stopped the Falcon’s scoring. The score shot to 20-13 in favor of Kinkaid. The Knights crept up on the Falcons, but couldn’t take the lead. Kinkaid won game 3, 25-19.
Game 4 followed the previous game’s pattern. Kinkaid scored the first two points. The Falcons took a five point lead but Episcopal came back strong tying it at six. Episcopal’s Wright hit a kill to break the tie. Then Kinkaid took a 10-9 lead. The Falcons led 20-16. The Knights weren’t out yet as they brought the score close, but still behind, 24-21. Kinkaid came out with the win, tying the match, 25-22.
Game 5 is where the momentum came into play. Reese had a kill to get the first point for Episcopal. And Kinkaid came right back with a kill to tie it. That’s how the whole game went. The score was tied at 4. 8, 11, and 15. But a team must win by two points. Again, the score was tied at 17, 18, and 19. Then Reese dropped one over the net for the lead. Episcopal scored the next point, winning the game, 21-19.
Overall, Episcopal is 7-6 and 1-2 in the SPC. Friday the Knights play Episcopal of Dallas. Coach Coe said they have not seen ESD, but expect a good match.
