With two high-powered offenses like Cy Fair and Langham Creek, many would have probably expected a game with plenty of scores. But instead it was the defenses that took control of the game in which Cy Fair was the victor in a 28-21 overtime win Friday night at Pridgeon Stadium.

“Our defense just tried to keep everything in front and rally to the ball,” Cy Fair coach Ed Pustejovsky said. “You know Max Jenkins and that offense did and outstanding job and hit some big plays on us.”

The opening drive started and finished with Cy Fair running back Sam McGuffie when he ran 45 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Langham Creek responded late in the quarter running back Kyron Lee capped off a drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Then it was time for the defenses to step up and make the big plays. After Cy Fair’s Michael Elliott ran a 30-yard kickoff return and McGuffie picked up plenty of yards to move the ball past mid-field, Langham Creek’s Cortez Paige came up with a big fumble recovery to give his team the ball back.

But before the celebration fully set in, the Lobo offense was facing a fourth-and-one from the Cy Fair 35. The Bobcat defense stood tough forcing a turnover on downs. But Langham Creek would quickly respond.

A Bobcat drive was halted when Paige intercepted a Cy Fair pass and returned it 35 yards. Four plays later, the Bobcats returned the favor by stuffing Langham Creek on a fourth-down option attempt.

Cy Fair made sure to capitalize on this turnover. Right before half, McGuffie broke three tackles to score from 18 yards out. This score gave the Bobcats a 14-7 advantage going into halftime.

The third quarter began with more defense and turnovers. Cy Fair’s Elliott recovered a fumble followed by Langham Creek’s Spencer Robinson. Now the Lobo offense would go to work.

Quarterback Jenkins went on an air assault to move the chains. Jenkins finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown strike to Paige. On the next series, Cy Fair had the ball facing a third-and-11. A screen play from Gavin West to fullback Wesley Cobb was good a first down and then some.

Moments later, McGuffie took it in from a yard out to regain the lead for the Bobcats. But the lead did not last long as Lee scored his second touchdown from 2 yards out to tie the game. Both teams had a few more opportunities to score the game-winning touchdown in regulation, but couldn’t.

In overtime, Cy Fair started with the ball on the 25 and began moving it quickly. West would connect with John Leonhardt for a first down. Two plays later, McGuffie ran in touchdown No. 4 with a 1-yard run.

Langham Creek got their opportunity to respond, but it was halted by a fourth-down stop led by Bobcat defenders Travis Ashford and Daniel Moose.

“We gave it our all of those fourth downs,” Cy Fair linebacker Moose said. “We knew it was all or nothing. We gave up a lot of stuff, but we played hard.”
