Stratford and Memorial are facing off Saturday in the District 19-5A tennis finals. The first school to win a combined 10 matches wins and advances to the regional championships at Deer Park in two weeks.

Saturday’s competition began with doubles. Each team has three men’s, three women’s and one mixed team. Play got underway as Stratford’s Carlene Leyden and Julia Hatridge won the first match, giving the Spartans the early lead.

Memorial’s Jonathan Chang and Adam Putterman won the next match, tying the competition. Chang went to state last year and is ranked in the top 8 in Texas.

With doubles finishing up and singles about to start, Memorial led the competition, 4-2.

“We are seeing a match up similar to when we played them before, just a short time ago. But there’s still a lot of matches to be played,” Stratford coach Rory Frazee said.

The Athletes Connection will keep you posted on who’s moving on to the regional championships throughout the day.
