The Elsik Rams and Cinco Ranch Cougars faced off Saturday night as both teams were 2-0, looking to share the district lead with Katy at 3-0. First time varsity starter, Anthony Robinson, led the Elsik offense to a 20-15 victory.

Cinco Ranch had the first possession but couldn’t get it started. The Cougars were forced to punt. Elsik came up with a big block and recovered the ball on the Cougar 13. The Rams’ second play led to running back Derell Smith’s touchdown. Elsik led the game 7-0, just 2:30 into the first quarter.

The Cougar’s next possession put them on  Elsik’s 29-yard line. At fourth-and-eleven, the Cougars went for the first down. Unable to get the yards, Elsik took over on downs at their own 29.
The Rams’ drive led to their own 40. The Rams fumbled as Cinco Ranch’s Dillon Vollmer recovered the ball. The Cougars made two first downs and at fourth-and-goal, Steven Lomax kicked a 25-yard field goal, putting Cinco Ranch on the board.

At the start of the second quarter, Elsik had the ball in scoring position, but didn’t get fourth-and-one and had to turn the ball over to the Cougars.

Cougar quarterback Shane Ros came into the game replacing Zach Myers as Cinco Ranch started on the Rams’ 9. The Cougars were again forced to punt, as were the Rams on their next possession.

Neither team scored again in the half as Elsik led 7-3.

The Rams started the third quarter on their own 19. After three first downs, Emmanuel Frias kicked at 41-yard field goal, giving Elsik a seven point lead. 10-3.
Cinco Ranch quarterback Zach Myers came back into the game and tried to get his team a touchdown, but on the Cougar 43 yard line, CR was forced to punt.
Elsik’s next possession led to another field goal by Frias. At the start of the fourth quarter, Frias kicked a 27-yarder, bringing the score to 13-3, Elsik on top.

The Cougars made three first downs on their next possession to their 45. The Rams defense forced a fumble and recovered on the Cougar 41. Elsik capitalized on the fumble recovery as running back Jeremy Hills ran in a 14-yard touchdown with 5:27 left in the game. Elsik 20, Cinco Ranch 3.

Shane Ros entered the game again for the Cougars and started on their 27. With 5:27 left to make something happen, Ross connected with T.J. Cardone for a 74-yard pass and the touchdown. The extra point was no good, bringing the score to 20-9.

Cinco Ranch went for the on-side kick and it worked out in their favor. They started on their 49 only to fumble, as Elsik’s Ricky Bass recovered. But the Rams couldn’t capitalize this time and they were forced to punt.

With jut two minutes left in the game, Cinco Ranch had one last chance to score. Ros threw and 80-yard pass to Will Morris for first-and-goal. With 1:17 left, Adam Hirtz ran in the one yard for a Cougar touchdown. Ros tried for the two-point-conversion but came up short. Elsik won the game 20-15.

“Well it’s just a great game. Two great football teams played hard. They deserved it just as much as we did. Everybody got a break here and there. It’s just one of those games where we were luckier than they were,” said Elsik head coach Bill Barron.
