Zayne Belal, captain of the varsity water polo team at Ross S. Sterling High School in Baytown, has his priorities in order.

“I plan on getting as much scholarship money as possible,” Belal said, “and playing Division I (water) polo for the college I attend.”

Once Belal makes a decision on which college that will be, Rangers coach Scott Slay said he will be an asset.

“Zayne has a tremendous amount of potential and is a very hard worker,” Slay said. “He will contribute heavily to the university he chooses to attend. I could see him representing his country in the Olympics at some point.”

Whether Belal plays for college or country, Tara Brigham, his friend and teammate, said “he is sure to excel in everything he puts effort in.”

Wherever Belal takes his talent, he will bring an already impressive resume. He has played on the Texas All-State team for the past three years and the All-National team for the past four years. He also was named to the All-American team in 2006.

“I’ve been in the sport since I was 7,” said Belal, who practices anywhere from 10 to 20 hours a week. Currently, Belal spearheads the Rangers (27-1 through Oct. 1), the state’s No. 1-ranked boys’ squad. (The Lady Rangers are 28-0 and also top-ranked.)

Belal’s persistence and determination pay off not only in the pool, but also in helping him to excel academically and socially. Friend and schoolmate Courtney Briscoe describes him as “a scholarly, wholesome student, as well as a funny, talented guy.”

Perhaps Belal’s best quality is the positive and steadfast attitude that made him the team’s leader and captain. Not only does he surpass his coach’s expectations, but other teammates are impressed with his performance as well. They look to Belal for positive reinforcement, finding that and more in their optimistic and talented captain. They say he keeps the squad determined, confident and prepared for the day’s challenges.

The Rangers are headed to Austin this weekend for the state championships.  With Belal taking the lead, the Rangers are confident they can make a run for the title.

“Zayne inspires us,” said teammate Stevie Ray, “to be better players, better students and overall better people. Zayne is a true leader.”
