Cinco Ranch and Katy Taylor faced off Friday afternoon in the District 18-5A Tennis Finals. The Cougars and Tigers are no strangers to this part of the season as both teams have continued on to the Region III Championships.

First on the courts was doubles tennis. Three men, three women, and one mixed. And as the doubles began to wind down, Taylor led 2-0.

Both coaches had early thoughts on the day and the matches.

“Hopefully we can pull out some of the doubles and be pretty even going into the singles,” said Colin Harvey, Cinco Ranch head coach.

“The day has its ups and downs. Some kids are playing great and some are having a rough day. We can’t all play great at the same time. It’s all part of being a team,” said Kirk Kniffen, Taylor head coach.

Taylor high school has won the regional tournament the last twelve consecutive years and won state in 1997, 1998, and 2002. Cinco Ranch has made the regional tournament the last seven consecutive years and hopes to make it to state this year.

Last time the two teams played each other, Taylor won 10-1, losing only one doubles match.

Singles will take the court later in the evening and The Athlete's Connection will stay tuned, updating you with the winner.
