Strake Jesuit’s 5-1 record faced Cy Springs’ number one defense Friday night in a game that was sure to be a good one. The Crusaders, coming off their only loss of the season last week, defeated Cy Springs 30-14.

“Going into the game, they were the number one defense in district, so we knew they were going to be very good on defense," Strake Jesuit head coach Ron Counter said.

But the Crusaders struck fast, scoring 10 first-quarter points. On their second possession, quarterback Jeff Mc Vaney had an 18-yard carry to set up their first score, a 28-yard field goal by Alex Wilkins.

Strake Jesuit began its next possession at the Panther 6 after Cy Springs fumbled with a high snap on a punt. With 5:15 left in the quarter, tailback Tim Ashe ran three yards for the touchdown and a 10-0 lead.

Strake Jesuit pulled out another big score late in the second quarter.

Starting on their own 49, a first down brought them to the Panther 33. McVaney threw a pass to the end zone pass, and pass interference was called on Cy Springs. With the automatic first down and only eight seconds left, Mc Vaney tossed to Davis Burck for the touchdown and a 16-0 lead.

“We came out and tried to throw the ball some and got up on them 16-0, but, like every team in this district, no game is over with any lead. They came back and really played well the second half,” Counter said.

Cy Springs got on the board halfway through the third quarter. On their 39, quarterback Darius Wilson handed the ball off to Anthony Washington, who ran to the Crusader 19. On first-and-goal from the one yard line, Chris Mayfield ran in a Panther touchdown. Cy Springs was successful on the two-point conversion try, as Wilson ran it in on a keeper. Ending the third quarter, Strake Jesuit was on top, 16-8.

The fourth quarter saw the most action, as Strake Jesuit scored immediately. From the Panther 24, Mc Vaney passed to Burck for a first down.  His next target was Steven Glass, for another first down. McVaney capped off the drive himself, running six yards into the end zone for a 23-8 Crusader lead.

With less than two minutes left in the game, the Crusaders drove the ball down the field, hoping for another score. And McVaney got it done again. At the Panther 4-yard line, the quarterback ran in for the seven points, which would seal the victory for the Crusaders.

But Cy Springs played out the last minute without regard to the time left on the clock.  On their last play, with time running out, Wilson broke and ran 38 yards for the Panther touchdown to close out the 30-14 Strake Jesuit win.

Next for Strake Jesuit is Cy Creek, who is looking for their first district win.

“We’re happy we won, but we’re going to have to play better next week against Cy Creek. We know it’s going to be a challenge. We know we still have things to improve on, and, hopefully, we do that next week,” Counter said.
