The Katy Tigers showed everybody Saturday afternoon why they are ranked No. 1 in Texas. The Tigers emptied the bench against the Morton Ranch Mavericks and every player who hit the field contributed to the 52-12 win.
Katy improved to 7-0 overall.
“We came and played a little bit better but we got a ways to go, I was glad to get everybody in the game and a chance to play,” Tigers coach Gary Joseph said.
The Tigers scored three touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game. The first came from defensive back, Trent Hunter who took the pitch and ran in a six-yard touchdown. Katy’s Brad Graham forced a fumble and Blake Adler recovered the ball to get his team started on their next scoring drive.
Katy’s Aundre Dean carried the ball to the 1-yard line where quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell kept the ball to add another seven points to the board. The final touchdown of the quarter was started from Terrence Frederick’s interception, placing his team on the 18-yard line. From 5 yards out Mitchell connected with Marc Ferris for the touchdown in the back of the end zone.
The Mavericks continued to struggle against the Tiger defense in the second quarter. After a missed Maverick field goal attempt and several punts, the ball was back in Mitchell’s hands. With less than two minutes on the clock the Tigers extended their lead to 35 with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Joey Fuda.
Morton Ranch had the last possession of the half and took advantage of it. As the clock expired, quarterback, Matt Bumer hit Javicz Jones, running in a 36-yard pass and closed the half, 35-6.
The second half was a repeat of the first. With eight minutes on the clock a long pass down the field to Parker Ray and a carry by Dean landed the Tigers on the 15-yard line. From 15 yards out Mitchell used his blocks and found a hole running in the touchdown. On Katy’s next possession they worked their way into field goal position. Tiger kicker, Raul Balbuena added three points to the board to give Katy 45 points.
Morton Ranch’s defense did not go down without a fight. Maverick’s Jones contributed to the defense as well, stripping the ball and starting his team on the 44-yard line. Jones stayed on the field to finish his play, catching a 44-yard pass to end the third quarter down by 33.
The fourth quarter was full of fumbles. Katy received great field position on the Mavericks’ 13-yard line after Frederick recovered a fumble from the kick off.
