Cy-Fair outside hitter Ashley Vander Hey led the way with 16 kills as the Bobcats swept Lamar 25-14, 25-20, 25-7 in the area playoffs at the Aldine M.O. Campbell Center Thursday night.

“I think the girls were prepared for the game,” Cy Fair coach Donna Benotti said. “We have worked on some different strategies and the girls did those things effectively. We had excellent ball control and really worked together.”

In Match 1, Cy-Fair set the tone early defensively Nneka Ogwumike and Allicia Garza recording quite a few blocks. Both teams had some errors to cost them points, but Cambrey Oehler, Vander Hey, Garza each had four kills to take the first match.

Lamar battled back hard and gained some momentum in Match 2. Led by outside hitter Raisha Smith, the Redskins kept this match close throughout its entirety. They rallied to try and take this one, but Vander Hey’s seven kills proved to be too much.

Match 3 was all Cy-Fair. Chiney Ogwumike recorded two blocks and two kills for the final points while Vander Hey and Ogwumike had a combined seven kills to clinch the victory.

Cy-Fair advances to the third round and a possible matchup with Memorial early next week.
