If you have sensitive ears you did not want to be in Butler Field House Thursday night for the Bellaire-Cypress Woods Region 3-5A area playoff game. This game had students, parents and other volleyball enthusiast bouncing cheers off the walls as the score climbed to 25.

The Cy Woods Wildcats, made up of only freshmen, sophomores, and juniors took all three games, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-19 to move on to the regional quarterfinals.

“They are very team oriented so the team chemistry I think really helps us along,” Wildcat head coach Ashley Ahlfinger said. “I’ve got two to three sophomores starting and playing, on top of having a young team and of course we have no seniors, so it’s really unique.”

The Wildcats servers took care of business in game one and two as they set the ball in the right position for a quick response and gave the Cardinals trouble as they reacted to every play. Bellaire’s Kayla Saenger, Alyssa Moniaci, and Liz Grubb gave their team a push in game two, blocking hits and tipping the ball into the open court to give the Cardinals some momentum into game three.

Bellaire took an early lead in game three but Cy Woods’ kill leader, Desiree Elliott, evened the score and gained the lead with several aces and hard kills that made the crowd get out of their seats. Elliott had some assistance from Crystal Jozwiak and Caleigh McCorquodale who joined her at the net to and shut down any balls crossing over for the Area win.

The Wildcats will play the winner of Friday's Stratford-Cinco Ranch game early next week. A site and time are to be determined.

“We’ve watched them (Stratford and Cinco Ranch) play and they are both phenomenal teams and very well coached, so you know anything can happen at that point,” Ahlfinger said.

Elliott finished the game with eight kills. Bellaire’s Ariana Chinn led the Cardinals with 11 kills.
