Saturday morning qualifying teams and runners from all across the region gathered at North Harris Community College for the Region III Cross Country Championships. Thousands of coaches and fans were on hand to see who would be named champion and advance to the state meet next Saturday in Round Rock.

The Top 10 runners and the top three teams advanced to state.

In the girls division, Brazoswood junior Lauren Smith was crowned as champion with a time of 10:51. For the team champion, it was Kingwood with a total of 62 points.

“The girls ran well today and proved that they are a good team,” Kingwood coach Christi Burleson said. “But they have to do it again next week.”

The boys’ division champions featured several defending regional champions. Cinco Ranch’s Zac Flowers defended his title as the Region II champion with a time of 15:14.98 and Strake Jesuit team won with 90 points.

Strake Jesuit coach Mike Kerley spoke briefly on the preparation and work put into the program.

“Mental preparation, we didn’t push it. We just got ready and won our district,” Kerley said. “We came in here with the idea we had a chance to win this one. The coaches and athletes in this region are so good. How fortunate are we to be at this point?”
