The George Bush Broncos faced Memorial Tuesday night in the season-opener for both teams and pulled out a 49-45 victory.
The first score didn’t come until two-minutes into the game when Bush's Ashley Ezen hit a basket.
Ezen made another basket and to keep the Bronco momentum going, Jasmine Blakemore stole the ball from Memorial, making the basket for an 8-7 lead. Finishing the period was Carolyn Davis who made two baskets for the Broncos as they led 14-11 at the break.
The second period got started with Memorial shooting a three-pointer, the first of the game, to tie at 14. The Mustangs did it again for the next score and a 17-14 lead.
Davis on the free throw line hit one-of-two, bringing the score one point closer. Then teammate LaCreeshia Phillips tied the game at 17. Davis found herself at the free throw line again and this time nailed both shots for a 22-19 lead.
Memorial hit a three-point shot just before halftime, but the Broncos led by six, 28-22 at the half.
The Mustangs came within a point when they hit another three-pointer, then Davis had two great shots to push the Broncos' lead to 38-29. Then Ezen from the free throw line hit one-of-two to get that 10-point lead. And at the buzzer, Memorial’s Ashley Sunderhaft hit a 3-pointer to cut Bush's lead to 39-32.
Closing the gap in the fourth period was Sunderhaft with a basket that made it 39-36. LaCreeshia Phillips got two points, followed by Vivian Williams with three, and then Blakemore with two to make it 46-36.
At 47-39, the Mustangs hit two three-point shots. With only seconds left in the game, on the Mustangs’ attempt to score again, Williams stole the ball to seal the win.
“We’ve got a new bunch. We have some young guards that weren’t on varsity last year. They played well together. They were good help and were everywhere. They did a good job. Rebounding we need to work on, but they did a good job covering. They played well as a team,” Bush coach Christina Rankin said.
The Broncos face Alief Taylor Friday.
