The Merrell Center hosted the Region 3-5A quarterfinals Tuesday night, and the Cy-Fair Bobcats dominated the Memorial Mustangs with a 25-4, 25-14, 25-21 victory.

“We had a game plan and the kids executed it really well,” Cy-Fair (36-2) coach Donna Benotti said of this three-game sweep of the 19-5A district Champions.

From the first point the Bobcats took control and managed the tempo of the games. Cy-Fair used every player on the court to set up plays and get the ball where it needed to go. The Mustangs started off slow with communication problems but eventually started to find their stride as the games progressed.

The Mustangs allowed the Bobcats to go on a 14-point run in game one and score seven unanswered points in game two for the win, but they were not going to let their state dream go without a fight.

Memorial stayed close in game three, exchanging the lead in the beginning and hustling for every ball. However they did not have an answer for Cy Fair’s Nneka Ogwumike’s hard hitting kills. The Bobcat offense utilized their middle players giving them ample opportunities to attack the net and get the job done. Memorial’s Sidney Stewart kept her team within striking distance but the Mustangs were unable to overtake the Bobcats' cohesive play.

"This team is a real focused team," Benotti said. "They’re not emotional and they don’t go up and down and they’ve been real consistent all season.”

Ogwumike led both teams with 15 kills. Stewart had 10 kills for Memorial.

Cy-Fair will play Dulles (36-7) in the regional semifinals Friday night at Aldine ISD.
